Land for our original church building on Howard Street in Hagerstown was donated by Harry Bester who was operator of Bester's Ice Cream and other business interests.
The charter for Howard Street Methodist Episcopal Church was established at the Quarterly Conference on March 21, 1914.
Mr. John Feldman, who lived in Hagerstown's south end and was in the real estate business, Rev. Charles Brooks, a Salvation Army Captain and Methodist Missionary who lived in the south end of Hagerstown, and Lewis Orrick, who was a friend and fellow member of St. Paul's were instrumental in the planning of Howard St. Church.
On March 28, 1915, Howard Street Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated. The building was constructed by volunteer labor and donated materials.
The original church structure at Howard Street served the Methodist of the south end until 1929.
In 1929, the church building was remodeled along the lines of Spanish architecture.
In 1960, a new church building on Maryland Avenue, Hagerstown was built and dedicated.
From 1915 to 1960, twenty pastors served Howard Street Methodist Church.
Rev. Robert Wallace (served 1956-1958) was the first pastor to serve the church without any responsibility for other churches. During the 1950's, the membership reached 94, annual budget was $4,000.00 and the Pastor's salary was $1,400.00.
Rev. Paul Conley (served 1958-1962) was pastor during transition move from Howard Street to St. Andrews. (Church name was changed.)
First service at St. Andrews was held on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1960.
During 1960, membership at St. Andrews grew to 235.
In 1970, church mortgage was paid off after 10 years of contributions, fund raising, and matching funds from the Hoover Trust Fund. Samuel Hoover was a member and generous benefactor to St. Andrews. The Education Building of the church is maned in his memory.
In 1980, carpet, pews, and a Baldwin organ were purchased and installed in the church sanctuary.
In 1983, Rev. Ann Laprade was the first female pastor appointed to St. Andrews.
In 1986. the Parent's Day Out program was started as a ministry and outreach program for preschool children.
The "Energizers", a senior ministry, was started in the early 1990's. The group participates in fellowship activities, taking field trips, and supporting mission projects.
In 1998, a handbell choir was organized. At first, they used bells loaned from another church. Eventually, through donations from the congregation, a 3-octave set of handbells was purchased.
